Review: Soulless

Soulless

Soulless by Gail Carriger
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Vampires, werewolves, and octopi why I never. If you are expecting the typical vampire and werewolf novel then you are in for a surprise. Soulless is nothing less than a laugh out loud romantic comedy set in an alternate version of Victorian London. It’s the story of Alexis a 26 year old spinster who is repeatedly bashed by author for being old, ugly, and Italian. Who gets caught up in danger and mystery.

There are many long descriptions of clothes and it seems every other page has a mention of either how unmarriable Alexis is or how plain she looks. It’s full of uptight Victorian values and overly polite tea sipping conversations. Alexis is the least popular person in her household and at 15 her mom decided she was unfit to be married and so put her on the shelf. But unlike her normal family Alexis is soulless her touch returns supernatural beings to their formerly human state.

But like so many other things in this novel Alexis abilities are something she neither embraces or regrets she simply tolerates them as one would tolerate being too tall or too short. Her accidental killing of new born vampire at a rather dreadful party quickly leads her into a very eventful week even if people try very hard to keep her out of it.

Soulless by Gail Carriger is a fun entertaining read for steampunk fans, or those who enjoy paranormal romance.

My Rating 4 out of 5.
